40.54

案僧亮曰：應以男形成佛，名丈夫也，釋上句。具足法者，釋下句也。後調御丈夫，凡四種，應深說深、應淺說淺，明善調也。

Sengliang comments: He who ought to attain Buddhahood in male form is named a 'man'—this explains the preceding clause. 'Fully endowed with the Dharma' explains the subsequent clause. Later, under 'taming and guiding men', there are four types in all; expounding the profound when the profound is appropriate and expounding the shallow when the shallow is appropriate clarifies his excellence in taming.
