42.20

案僧亮曰：向來大臣並不見因果，言居王位自在得殺，不應愁苦，不進其師也。今耆婆見有因果，已既有罪，理應愁苦，不得安眠，是故問。

Sengliang states: Previously, the ministers did not see cause and effect; saying that occupying the king's throne allows sovereign killing and that he should not be sorrowful, they did not promote their masters [appropriately]. Now Jīvaka sees that there are causes and effects: having already committed a sin, in principle the king should be sorrowful and unable to sleep peacefully; therefore he asks.
