Daosheng notes: This is a separate objection against hearing and not hearing. If it were truly not as previously said, then this would be hearing what is heard again. Hearing cannot be repeatedly heard, just as what is unhearable must be unhearable. Sengliang says: This repeats the objection that a nonexistent phenomenon should not be hearable; just as a phenomenon that has already been heard cannot be heard again, how much less could that which is fundamentally and definitively nonexistent be hearable? Baoliang says: From here below, four analogies are successively borrowed to conclude the preceding objection. This first analogy clarifies that sound is a phenomenon that can be heard. Since nirvāṇa is neither voice nor sound, how can it be said that one hears what was not heard? Zhixiu says: This is the second objection. It states that what has already ceased cannot be heard.
