45.45

案僧亮曰：光以證佛所說，所以不得答也。寶亮曰：時眾之疑未去，佛不答也。眾生執心既重，若直以理答，不必為彼心用，所以寄事以感其情也。

Sengliang notes: Because the light was to corroborate what the Buddha said, he could not answer. Baoliang says: Because the doubts of the assembly at the time had not yet been removed, the Buddha did not answer. Since the grasping minds of sentient beings were heavy, if he answered directly with the principle, it would not necessarily be useful to their minds; hence he used an event to move their feelings.
