46.56

案道生曰：對明第六門也。僧亮曰：上二句說生法有無也，此說生相能生有無也。不生是無，而生能生無，故不可定也。僧宗曰：人情展轉生疑。若無已生故來生者，便是生於不可生者耶？今言亦不可如此說也。寶亮曰：亦無定生、定不生之性，故不可說。

Daosheng says: This is addressed to clarify the sixth heading. Sengliang says: The preceding two lines spoke of the existence or non-existence of born dharmas; this speaks of whether the characteristic of birth can give birth to existence or non-existence. The unborn is non-existence; that birth could give birth to non-existence therefore cannot be determined. Sengzong says: Human minds generate doubts one after another. If it is not the case that what has already been born comes to be born, is it then born from that which cannot be born? Now he states that it likewise cannot be spoken of in this way. Baoliang says: There is also no fixed nature of birth or fixed nature of non-birth, hence it cannot be stated.
