Sengliang comments: This separately explains the meaning of the four dharmas. 'Abandoning the ten unwholesome actions' explains that a good friend always accords with good deeds. 'If I do not give rise to evil' refers to one who speaks and acts in accordance with the Dharma. Benefiting me has two aspects: speaking in accordance with the Dharma is verbal benefit; acting in accordance with the Dharma is non-verbal benefit. Because there are wholesome dharmas, the benefit spoken of becomes ever deeper. 'For the sake of sentient beings' means being good and not engaging in what is not good. Sengzong says: The third explains the meaning of a good friend, briefly presenting their virtues.
