Sengliang states: Above it was said to arise together, so people might think that mind and greed combine simultaneously. Now it is clarified that this is not so. Baoliang says: This fixes their status. If the mind were located here and greed resided over there, the two could be brought together to unite. Since the principle is not so, how could they combine? Nor are they uncombined: meeting an object, [greed] immediately arises, but there is no separate combining phenomenon to be found. If a pure mind engages conditions, it is called good; if an impure mind engages objects, it is called evil. Therefore, the Buddhas and bodhisattvas have completely destroyed greed and desire, having no further obstacles of delusion, and so their minds attain liberation. Ordinary persons possess all the fetters of greed and desire, tangled by defilements, and constantly dwell in their midst.
