Sengliang comments: Explaining the meaning of the Buddha's roar: first, bodily strength and wisdom are the fruit, and the three practices are their foundation. The Buddha is endowed with these many virtues, and therefore can roar. The four feet are moral discipline; the three practices are compared to the rock cavern. Shaking the tail and uttering the sound refers to the activities of great compassion. Baoliang says: The body is the dharmakāya. Strength refers to the ten powers. The teeth are the functions of sarvākārajñatā. The four feet are the four bases of psychic power (ṛddhipāda). Abiding safely in the rock cavern is the profound tranquility of the four dhyānas. Shaking the tail and uttering the sound is great loving-kindness and compassion.
