案道生曰：無有得第一義空者，故不名下也。僧亮曰：見三界過，見涅槃常，以不到故，逆流為上也。僧宗曰：菩薩識第一義空，所以言中也。以離凡夫之下，非二乘之上也。寶亮曰：釋上定樂行人也。菩薩稱而解，終歸用此第一義空為體也。

Daosheng states: There are none who attain the emptiness of the ultimate truth, therefore it is not called inferior. Sengliang states: Seeing the faults of the three realms and seeing the permanence of nirvāṇa, because they have not yet reached it, swimming against the stream is superior. Sengzong states: Bodhisattvas recognize the emptiness of the ultimate truth; that is why it is called middle. Because it departs from the inferior of ordinary persons, it is not the superior of the two vehicles. Baoliang states: This explains the person of the practice of fixed bliss above. Bodhisattvas understand in accord [with principle], and ultimately take this emptiness of the ultimate truth as their essence.
