54.131

案僧亮曰：凡夫以㳂流為下。以不得故，於凡不名為上，證非下也。寶亮曰：明二乘不能會此第一義空，故不名中道。若發真解，乃得無上菩提也。凡夫不能得故，所以不名為者，是下也。

Sengliang states: Ordinary persons are inferior because they drift with the current. Because they cannot attain it, in relation to ordinary persons it is not called superior, proving that it is not inferior. Baoliang states: This clarifies that the two vehicles cannot accord with this emptiness of the ultimate truth, hence it is not called the middle way. Only if one produces true understanding does one attain unsurpassed bodhi. Because ordinary persons cannot attain it, the reason it is not called [inferior] is this inferior.
