Daosheng comments: Being like a hare or a horse refers to the contemplation of the two vehicles. When a hare or a horse crosses a river, it does not reach the riverbed; this illustrates that sentient beings are covered by ignorance and do not see the principle. Sengliang comments: This clarifies that their contemplation is shallow. Because they do not see the beginning of causes and conditions, they do not sever the view of permanence; because they do not see the end of causes and conditions, they do not sever the view of annihilation. Baoliang comments: Secondly, it explains that the three vehicles all contemplate anutpāda, but their seeing of the principle differs, having differences of shallow and deep; the crossing of the river by a hare or a horse is borrowed as a metaphor.
