Sengliang comments: Ordinary beings do not see it, and this causes them to undergo suffering. Yet seeing has depth and shallowness, so the cessation of suffering differs. Regarding not seeing the buddhadhātu: the Middle Way is the buddhadhātu, but the two vehicles have one-sided views and do not see the Middle Way. / Sengzong says: In the eighth turn, it means that four kinds of people contemplate it with varying degrees of shallowness and depth; only the supreme contemplation exhausts it, showing that it is profound. / Baoliang says: The eighth point next explains the fixed characteristics of the stages in the cognition that contemplates the twelve conditioning links. Above it was said that the principle of the twelve conditioning links is profound, beyond knowing and seeing, and only the Buddha can exhaustively perceive its beginning and end. Now it is next explained that those below the Buddha may also come to contemplate this principle; but contemplating it without yet having mastered it, the understanding they give rise to has depth and shallowness, with four different stages: inferior cognition attains the śrāvaka path, middling cognition attains the pratyekabuddha path, superior cognition attains dwelling in the stage of the ten abodes, and only supreme cognition exhaustively sees the conditioning links, thereby completing the unsurpassed path. Saying here that one attains the śrāvaka path is likely not referring to the actual practice. If words are used provisionally to entice the foolish, there should be no objection.
