Daosheng says: He asks about the essence of the buddhadhātu. Sengliang says: The second asks about the essence of the buddhadhātu. Sengzong says: There are six questions in all. The first three questions ask about the nature of cause and effect; the latter three questions ask about the meaning of seeing it, in order to verify its existence. This asks about the nature of the fruit. The fruit is the ultimate principle, which is why [the Buddha] prompted him to ask about it first. The answer below takes the essence and characteristic of awakening, divine wisdom, being unchanging, as the nature. The fundamentally existing principle of natural authenticity lies beyond all transformations; only when practice is complete and illumination is all-pervading does one first meet this principle. It is explained as the nature not apart from divine wisdom. Baoliang says: He poses the question by raising both essences, cause and effect. 'Is' means 'made as'. That is, what is it that is named the essence of the nature of the fruit? What is it that is named the essence of the nature of the two causes?
