54.9

案僧亮曰：不談問者之德則聽者不至，故厚加讚歎也。欲師子吼者，師子是無畏之號，唯佛乃具。十地菩薩具三行，能學佛吼，德亦不淺也。寶亮曰：所以先讚歎勸大眾設敬供養者，欲使受悟者發殷重心故也。

Sengliang comments: If one does not discuss the questioner's virtue, the listeners will not be earnest; thus he praises him generously. Regarding 'wishing to roar the lion's roar': 'lion' is an epithet of fearlessness, which only a Buddha fully possesses. Bodhisattvas of the tenth ground possess the three practices and can emulate the Buddha's roar; their virtue is also by no means shallow. Baoliang says: The reason he first offers praise and encourages the great assembly to show respect and make offerings is that he wishes to cause those who receive awakening to arouse an earnest and profound mind.
