Sengliang comments: Although the cause contains no fruit, its efficacy has proximity and distance: the distant is called contributory cause, and the proximate is called direct cause; this answers that arising has an order. Sengzong comments: This means that because milk is the direct cause for curd, it is spoken of as existing; it is not that it already exists. Baoliang comments: Having finished refuting the clinging, he returns to the root of the correct meaning, stating that milk is the direct cause, and ferment and warmth act as contributory causes to reveal and bring forth curd.
