56.22

案僧亮曰：以水灌則生，以乳灌則長疾，證緣因之力，無而能生也。寶亮曰：以二事破其執也。前翻縱談乳亦能生樹，後一翻舉四大之質金玉有本，不可同論，酪之與樹自各有正因耳。

Sengliang comments: Irrigating with water produces it, while irrigating with milk makes it grow rapidly, proving the power of contributory causes, that what is absent can produce. Baoliang comments: Refuting their clinging with two points. The first round concedes that milk can also produce trees; the second round cites the substance of the four great elements, where gold and jade have their roots and cannot be equated; curd and trees naturally each have their own direct cause.
