Sengliang comments: He uses the understanding that takes the mirror [or sword] to resolve all objections. Although one takes the blade to reflect one's face, the blade originally has no face in it. How could one, just because one takes milk to make curd, claim that the milk already contains curd? Baoliang comments: Herein are four levels of objections: First, if the visual faculty's light reaches the object and only then sees, then fire should burn the eye. Second, if one sees by reaching the object, doubt should not arise. Third, the visual light is material form (rūpa), and water is also material form; both are obstructive. One should only be able to see the water—how could one see the fish and stones within the water? Fourth, preventing an objection: if one says one sees because it does not reach, why does one not see objects on the other side of a wall?
