案僧亮曰：若有醋性，不能自了，何能為他而作了耶？僧宗曰：若了因不能自了更須了者，何能了他耶？

Sengliang comments: If the nature of sourness cannot illuminate itself, how could it act as an illuminator for another? Sengzong comments: If an illuminating cause cannot illuminate itself and further requires illumination, how can it illuminate another?
