Sengliang comments: Conditioned things vary in capacity, each keeping its own portion as its nature. Fire is a single phenomenon; how could it have two [functions]? Furthermore, he means: if fire illuminates itself, the illuminating and the illuminated are different; the illuminating would be the cause, and the illuminated would be the result. How could a single phenomenon have both? Baoliang comments: He continues to refute the non-Buddhists who grasp at a nature as a fixed phenomenon that perpetually maintains a single state and cannot have two functions. That is: you claim that the illuminating cause both illuminates itself and illuminates another. If it illuminates itself and can also illuminate another, then it is not a self-nature. Why? You hold that the illuminating cause is only a single phenomenon; how could it have two functions? If the illuminating cause were dual, milk should also be dual: milk should also illuminate itself and also illuminate curd. If so, why would it need external conditions to become apparent?
