大般涅槃經集解 6.19

案法瑤曰：此譬明己習學始爾，未成法身，請佛住世，諮問修學，法身可成。曇濟曰：若有慈者，則應救苦；今既捨苦，豈謂有慈也。

Fayao states: "This simile clarifies that one's own practice and study have only just begun and the dharmakāya is not yet perfected. One therefore requests the Buddha to abide in the world, so that by questioning and practicing under him, the dharmakāya may be attained." Tanji states: "If one has compassion, one ought to rescue [beings from] suffering; now that he abandons them in their suffering, how can he be said to possess compassion?"
