Sengliang states: "It is out of compassionate pity that he manifests extinction. This has been fully explained in the preceding text. Ordinary beings, however, are attached to conditions of affection and heavy in sorrow, unable to awaken to the principle. Now he specifically addresses the monks in order to encourage the assembly." Baoliang states: "Below is the second [section], the exhortation. It has three meanings: first, admonishing the contemporary assembly; second, a general exhortation regarding cause and fruit; third, exhorting them to abandon what they previously attained and cultivate the present letter *i*. This is the first, facing the monks to admonish ordinary beings. 'Such is the nature of all Buddhas': where there is an evocative condition, there is a response; when the condition is exhausted, he returns to the real. 'Delighting in diligence' instructs them to uphold the precepts and guard the mind. 'Mindfully recollecting' is their cultivation of concentration; the following phrase is their cultivation of wisdom." Zhixiu states: "Below is the third section, directly setting forth all dharmas and stating the Buddha's original intention to urge them to question. It has three distinct parts: first, intending to have them question, he first uses two verses to stop their distracted minds; second, he broadly sets forth all dharmas to urge questioning; third, he further sets forth other conditions to urge questioning. This is the first, stopping their grief and distraction."
