Sengliang states: "As the saying goes: 'To take something away, one must first surely grant it.'" Sengzong states: "Hitherto he urged questioning; from here downward he deprives them. There are four sections: first, depriving them of the fruit; second, depriving them of the cause; third, presenting the simile of the precious jewel to clarify why the former fruit was empty; fourth, synthesizing the two teachings." Baoliang states: "Below is the third [section], specifically exhorting them to abandon the fruit previously attained. It has four points: first, praising the monks for being able to leave behind the five difficulties and encouraging them; second, directly depriving them of the fruit; third, depriving them of the cause previously practiced; fourth, exhorting them to cultivate and grasp the present permanent fruit." Zhixiu states: "From here down to 'like the worldly letter *i*', the third part further sets forth other conditions to urge questioning. There are three chapters: first, setting forth the monks' virtues; second, setting forth the monks' shortcomings; third, setting forth the Buddha's true instruction to urge questioning."
