Daosheng states: Even if they attain understanding according to the past teaching, they are still not clear about the other teachings. Sengliang states: This again attributes fault to the Buddha. If compassion must rescue the grave, and should leave the holy to attend to the ordinary, then ordinary persons cling to permanence, and so the Buddha should manifest extinction. If that is so, we have a half-[cured] illness, hence using malaria as an analogy, and the Buddha should save us. Fayao states: This analogy clarifies impermanent nirvāṇa. Although they have escaped fragmented [samsāric death], death by inconceivable transformation still remains; this is the half-day illness. Baoliang states: Malaria is a sickness of alternating cold and fever; it clarifies that our ninety-eight proclivities have not all been eliminated. Zhixiu states: The Buddha eliminated our coarse afflictions so that they do not arise on that day; yet the subtle roots still remain unremoved, like malaria that has not yet flared up.
