案僧亮曰：明退是暫爾耳，而生善是必定也。泉譬佛果，村譬三界，水譬常樂，渴譬八苦，智人譬佛，無異路譬八苦可厭、常樂可欣，八道定也。

Sengliang comments: This clarifies that regression is only temporary, whereas the arising of goodness is certain. The spring symbolizes the fruit of Buddhahood; the village symbolizes the three realms; the water symbolizes permanence and bliss; thirst symbolizes the eight sufferings; the intelligent person symbolizes the Buddha; the absence of any other path symbolizes that the eight sufferings are repulsive, permanence and bliss are to be joyfully sought, and the eightfold path is certain.
