案僧亮曰：凡舉三事，此第一緣起也。薄拘羅，是惡鬼之名。夫化之所被以信為本，而闡提斷信，釋所以不受化也。僧宗曰：此下第二，廣說斷善之過也。寶亮曰：此下正明善星斷善根之相，兼證釋向第二第三答也。佛雖有大慈方便，而善星淨信意難出故，無所益也。

Sengliang comments: In all, three events are cited; this is the first causal context. Bakkula is the name of an evil yakṣa. Transformative teaching is received with faith as its foundation; but the icchantika has severed faith, which explains why he does not receive transformative teaching. Sengzong comments: From here below is the second [part], which expounds at length on the fault of severing good roots. Baoliang comments: From here below, it directly clarifies the characteristics of Sunakkhatta's severing of good roots, while also corroborating and explaining the previous second and third answers. Although the Buddha possesses the upāya of great compassion, because it is difficult for a mind of pure faith to arise in Sunakkhatta, there is no benefit.
