Sengliang notes: From here downward is the first section, explaining the characteristics of severing the roots of goodness in a person who severs them. Intending to raise a difficulty, he first recounts what Siṃhanāda explained: the monk Sunakkhatta is an incurable person. Sengzong says: Within explaining the severing of the roots of goodness, there are six turns: first, explaining that the Tathāgata's compassion is not unequal, but precisely because Sunakkhatta did not accept it, it is not the Tathāgata's fault; second, extensively listing his faults and errors; third, explaining the severing of the goodness of the three periods of time; fourth, explaining that the Tathāgata fully knows the power of capacities and can know how the lower is converted into the middling, and so forth; fifth, extensively explaining disputes, showing that because sentient beings do not understand the intention underlying the teaching, they produce grave offenses; sixth, explaining why the roots of goodness are severed, extensively giving rise to wrong views. Zhixiu says: In the first section there are five divisions: first, discussing the severing of the roots of goodness; second, explaining that capacities are indeterminate; third, explaining disputes; fourth, explaining attachments; fifth, explaining wrong views.
