64.16

案僧亮曰：法是事體，名是義因，義是名實。內外之稱，各有總別。僧宗曰：明如來說法不定，豈可承此而生執著耶？就一名一義綺互為言，尋求下釋，各存其旨也。

Sengliang comments: "Phenomenon" is the substance of the thing; "name" is the cause of the meaning; "meaning" is the reality of the name. Designations of internal and external each possess general and specific aspects. Sengzong says: This clarifies that the Tathāgata's teaching of the Dharma is not fixed; how could one rely on this to give rise to clinging? Interchanging single names and single meanings, one seeks the explanation below, each preserving its own purport.
