Sengliang comments: "Parinir" here means "non-" or "not". "Vāṇa" means "arising" or "emerging". The Central Asian sounds contain many meanings; they are all names for emerging from birth and death, and also the meaning of emerging from birth and death: a single name and a single meaning. Sengzong says: "A single name" takes the name of having no result, yet it is variously differentiated. Daohui's records state: Nirvāṇa is a single name; the substance of nirvāṇa is the phenomenon of that single name. Creating various names based on the substance of nirvāṇa is why it is said that for a single named phenomenon, immeasurable names are spoken. Zhixiu says: Grasping a single name to apprehend the phenomenon, one speaks immeasurable names in accordance with the immeasurable aspects of meaning of this named phenomenon; it does not mean that a single name itself creates immeasurable names.
