Sengliang comments: If there were two Buddhas, sentient beings would not generate the thought that they are rare to encounter. Yet some hearing this statement thought that none exist in the realms of the ten directions, which is why disputes arose. Sengzong says: This is the twentieth dispute. In terms of the correct doctrine, in the context of responsive functioning, within a single transformation here there is only one Buddha. Those who do not understand this intent say that there are no other Buddhas in the ten directions. Hearing that there are Buddhas of the ten directions, they say that Buddhas of the ten directions all exist simultaneously without a separate dharmakāya; this damages the original and the trace. The two treatises disputing with each other both lose the principle. Baoliang says: When sentient beings hear of Buddhas of the ten directions, they think: 'If this Buddha's Dharma here is rigorous and demanding, I shall go to that Buddha over there to learn.' Wishing to seize the minds of beings, he said that within one world there are not two Buddhas. If hearing that they exist, they say that Buddha and Buddha are unrelated; if saying they do not exist, there can only be one; therefore disputes arise.
