Sengliang comments: Fifth is the section on generating the good, seeking an opening from an impasse. Those who grasp one-sidedly cannot discern, and can sever the roots of goodness. Those who do not grasp can discern, and regenerate the roots of goodness. Below, it explains that buddhadhātu is not fixed and matters must be discerned, which is the meaning of generating the good. Sengzong says: The second part of the major division clarifies the regeneration of the good. Baoliang says: The fifth part of the major division clarifies the regeneration of the good. Although sentient beings sever the roots of goodness, when receiving suffering they develop a mind that reviles suffering; therefore, they regenerate the roots of goodness, continuing without interruption until reaching buddhahood. Now, regarding the words in this passage, they are quite expansive; they are briefly divided into five distinctions: first, clarifying the regeneration of the roots of goodness to determine the nature of cause and effect; second, clarifying the practice of the Middle Way; third, citing the Buddha's three kinds of speech to make beings open-minded, clarifying that the Buddha's words have no fixed form and must not be grasped rigidly; fourth, clarifying whether buddhadhātu exists or not; fifth, distinguishing gains and losses to conclude the above.
