Sengliang comments: When first undergoing suffering, remorse arises in the mind, and goodness is regenerated. If suffering is already intense, the mind is confused, turbid, and does not know to feel remorse; not until about to leave does one feel remorse. Sengzong says: This refers to a person of sharp faculties. Baoliang says: If one has extremely sharp faculties, like the five hundred brahmins, merely entering hell they are able to generate the good, because such a person is intelligent. This is also because they had previously never experienced great suffering; now, receiving birth in hell, they immediately perceive the severity of the suffering, and are able to reflect, examine, and awaken to the fact that what they did was contrary to principle, thereby instantly changing their mind. If their spiritual faculties are slightly inferior, not until leaving hell, under the subsequent remaining retributions, are they able to reform. There are countless paths within this; it cannot be fixed. Daohui's notes state: At the time of first entering, suffering has just begun, spiritual awareness is not yet dim, and they still have correct consciousness; later, when leaving hell, the suffering endured is light, allowing their mind to arise; therefore, at these two times they are able to generate the good.
