66.36

案僧亮曰：佛意，夫諍以偏執失中，今法理不同，答有四種，不可一向定說也。僧宗曰：今先牽四種答者，意在分別答也。寶亮曰：未是正答難也，且舉佛有四種語法耳。下次第解釋，以分別答為答也。智秀曰：四種答問，別是一科法門。今取分別及置答以釋其難，故先總列四章門，下別釋也。

Sengliang states: "The Buddha's meaning is that disputes miss the middle path due to one-sided clinging. Now, as the principles of phenomena differ, there are four kinds of answers, which cannot be stated unequivocally in a single way." Sengzong states: "Here, citing the four kinds of answers first aims at answering by distinguishing." Baoliang states: "This is not yet directly answering the objection, but merely bringing up that the Buddha has four modes of discourse. Below, he explains them sequentially, employing the answer by distinguishing as the response." Zhixiu states: "The four modes of answering questions constitute a distinct doctrinal rubric. Here, taking distinguishing and setting aside to resolve his objection, he first lists the four general chapter headings, and below explains them individually."
