Daosheng comments: "Since the original intent was not to make characters, it is not writing at all. Heretical teachings do not intend permanence, so they are not teachings of permanence." Sengliang comments: "An insect does not know writing. Although there are characters, they are not true characters; how could a wise person find it astonishing as if it knew how to write? As for not distinguishing among various illnesses and prescribing milk medicine for all of them: if an illness arises from the 'self' of hemp and wheat, one must not use the 'self' to treat it. If it arises above the eight sovereign masteries, one may use the 'self' to treat their ignorance." Sengzong comments: "In the three cultivations above, the eight inversions were explained at length; having only the names without grasping their reality, how does that differ from the traces left by an insect?"
