70.57

案僧亮曰：生死因果，心作心受。眾生皆有五道之業，一心不並起，不一時受。汝謂我作我受，我遍五道，應一時受報也。寶亮曰：若五道有報，何為修善以滅惡耶？

Sengliang states: The cause and effect of saṃsāra are created by the mind and experienced by the mind. Sentient beings all possess the karma of the five destinies, but a single mind does not arise simultaneously [in all], nor does it experience [them] at the same time. You claim that the ātman acts and the ātman receives, and that the ātman pervades the five destinies; then it should experience the retributions simultaneously. Baoliang states: If there is retribution in the five destinies, why cultivate the good to eliminate the evil?
