案僧亮曰：我則本來清淨，不為苦縛，不應為樂而修諸善而求解脫。若謂不從因緣者，畜生亦應得。

Sengliang states: The ātman would be fundamentally pure and not bound by suffering; it should not cultivate good dharmas for the sake of pleasure to seek liberation. If one claims it does not arise from causes and conditions, animals should also attain it.
