8.44

案僧宗曰：夫欲通法，應識耶正。天魔外道阻亂佛法，假形偽說以迷未達，從其化者長居生死。當爾之時，四依出世，遏魔揚道也。向云天魔宜識，非言莫辨魔說佛說。理有分別，是以寄說以檢耶正也。

Sengzong states: To propagate the Dharma, one must recognize the false and the true. Heavenly māras and non-Buddhists obstruct and disrupt the Buddha's Dharma, assuming false forms and specious teachings to delude those who have not yet attained understanding, so that those who follow their conversion remain perpetually in saṃsāra. At such a time, the four refuges appear in the world to thwart Māra and promote the Way. As stated earlier, heavenly māras should be recognized, but without words one cannot distinguish Māra's speech from the Buddha's speech. Because there is a distinction in principle, this is lodged in speech to examine the false and the true.
