Sengzong states: The former teaching explained two kinds of people whose illness was definitely incurable. What this sūtra explains can all be cured; because the power of the sūtra is superior, this also praises the teaching. Baoliang states: It explains that icchantikas, those who commit deadly transgressions, and those who slander the Dharma—these three persons—are definitively unable to advance, whereas bodhisattvas are definitively able to proceed. People of the Śrāvaka vehicle, if they meet a good friend, advance; if they do not meet one, they regress—explaining the non-final. The remaining half-gāthā below turns to request the Buddha to explain this. Tanxian states: The remaining gāthās and so forth below mean that what has remainder is non-final, while what is without remainder is final. This answers this question. The concluding answer says: "Excluding only the auxiliary path and the permanent, blissful, good dharmas, all the rest have remainder or are without remainder."
