案僧亮曰：攢譬思慧、搖譬修慧，雖自求度，而不生二慧也。僧宗曰：正是無方便之說也。上來諸句未若此顯，但保著人天，不知推求更有勝此者也。寶亮曰：雖復欲行小乘，不知作假名法空觀行。

Sengliang comments: Churning with a stick illustrates the wisdom of reflection; rocking illustrates the wisdom of cultivation. Although seeking self-deliverance, they do not give rise to the two wisdoms. Sengzong says: This is precisely the explanation of lacking upāya. The preceding lines were not as clear as this: they merely cling to humans and gods, not knowing how to investigate and seek what is superior to this. Baoliang says: Although wishing to practice the Small Vehicle, they do not know how to engage in the contemplation of nominal designations and the emptiness of phenomena.
