Daosheng comments: If they do not even know that worldly goodness leads to birth in heaven, how could they know to take refuge in the Three Jewels? Sengliang comments: These are the ones who add only a little water. As for 'not knowing that it is caused by practicing pure conduct': if they cannot even know the immediate causes of the human and heavenly realms, how could they know the permanent causes that transcend the world? Sengzong comments: 'Cultivating a little pure conduct and experiencing a little pleasure' applies to milking and consuming it themselves, like that band of thieves. 'Milk with added water' again raises the fourth parable. 'Yet these ordinary people truly cannot know it. That it is caused by a little pure conduct' is precisely the adding of water; 'cause' means the reason. Since they conceptualize the body as permanent, how could they comprehend the reason for true permanence? Baoliang comments: Below this explains the teaching. Formerly it was proclaimed that non-Buddhists are born in heaven, which was thought to take heterodox views as the cause. Now it is explained that this is not caused by heterodox views, but because in the past they made offerings to their parents and had the goodness of filial respect as the cause. Since non-Buddhists do not know this principle, how could they know the path to escape saṃsāra? They perversely conceptualize inversions to form great heterodoxy.
