9.36

案僧宗曰：向以童子為化，顯無不等之失。然猶治罪人，於慈成硋，是故引此塗割二事以為問。

Sengzong comments: Previously, taking the boy to be an apparition showed that there is no fault of inequality. Yet wrongdoers are still punished, which creates an obstruction to benevolence; therefore, he cites these two matters of anointing and lacerating to pose the question.
