Sengliang states: "The oil is an analogy for grasping; the light is an analogy for afflictions. As for 'the vessel is impermanent and not the Tathāgata,' the meaning of the vessel is analogous, a partial metaphor. 'The Tathāgata embodies it, therefore it is called permanent' means that in the past he only spoke of the extinction of fetters being permanent, but did not say that the one who embodies it is permanent; that was [nirvāṇa] with remainder." Fayao states: "The four phrases on [nirvāṇa] without remainder cited above are also the secret of speech, but they did not directly manifest the past teaching as an elliptical exposition; now he directly clarifies it."
