Daosheng comments: After the Buddha's nirvāṇa, people investigated the scriptural teachings and clung biasedly to their meanings; regarding the principle of single flavor, it produced differences according to their discourses. When their grasping of meaning was biased, the bodies they received were distinct. Sengliang comments: Their grasp of understanding was not pure; when the Buddha passed away and the Dharma receded, people generated divergent understandings, gave rise to various views, and received differing fruits, which illustrates the suffering of losing understanding. Fayao comments: After the Buddha's nirvāṇa, each teacher held biased views, and therefore they explained the buddhadhātu in various different ways. In accordance with their biased clinging, the bodies they received were distinct, just as the places to which the medicine flowed had various differences. Sengzong comments: The principle of the buddhadhātu is one, but because people's attachments differed, there came to be ninety-five kinds [of wrong views]. Having created heterodox causes, they received the four evil fruits, like the various flavors.
