Sengliang comments: Bodhisattvas take the salvation of beings to heart. Since the Mahāyāna is the good medicine, it is explained first. 'Following all' means that to save beings through the Dharma, one must bend to accommodate and conform with beings, extending benevolence and virtue widely. Following comprises four things: first, physical form; second, language; third, faculties; fourth, activities. Making this vow means that having entered the five destinies, they share their pain and pleasure. In pain the mind retreats, and in pleasure attachment arises; without a great vow, there would be no way to relinquish both. Sengzong says: This praises present virtues. Baoliang says: 'Bodhisattva' here means a person with the mind directed toward the Way. Praising virtue does not go beyond personal practice and outward conversion. Here the praise is based on the three times; within a single lifetime, both meanings are complete.
