Sengliang notes: A master saves within a realm, and kin protect within a household; the Buddha is the savior and protector of all. Being without savior and without protector, one is therefore without refuge and without destination. Sengzong says: Pulling one out of suffering is called saving; establishing one in goodness is called protecting. Being without refuge or destination means the mind has nowhere to rely. Baoliang says: Being far removed from sheltering protection is like having no master; being separated from close counsel is like having no kin. If the Sage is in the world, evil does not arise, which is like saving; good flourishes daily, which is like protecting. Because what one relies upon is lost, one is without refuge or destination.
