Sengliang states: He speaks of the five kinds of upholding the sūtra to clarify transcending the world. Why? Because what is expounded in other sūtras is not yet ultimate, it is not complete. Upholding it while committing evil causes people to slander the sūtra. Upholding the sūtra while giving rise to evil, although able to benefit oneself, cannot benefit others, and is not a supramundane bodhisattva; therefore the Buddha only commands that one uphold the sūtra supramundanely, in accordance with the meaning of ultimate practice.
