Sengliang comments: Cunda's past vow was to provide the final offering and proclaim eternal presence. The principle having already been made manifest, his manifesting extinction while not being extinct, and manifesting eating while not eating, have broadly reached completion. Now Mañjuśrī initiates it first, and only then does the Buddha tell him verbally. Fayao comments: Previously, Mañjuśrī prompted Cunda to prepare the offering and was scolded by Cunda, making it seem as if Mañjuśrī's previous words were empty, which would mean that the sixteen-foot body also does not accept people's donations at all. The offerings of the assembly at that time would have been made in vain, failing to fulfill their original intent. Therefore, [the Buddha] emitted light that illuminated Mañjuśrī's body to verify that Mañjuśrī's earlier words were not empty, and thus it was appropriate to prompt him. Sengzong comments: The ninth [section] of the request gate, prompting the offering. As revealing the permanent and brushing away the traces have already been completed above, the minds of living beings will no longer stagnate in traces. Even while eating, they know he does not eat; thus he emits light again to express that the traces must depart. Daohui notes: Cunda earlier requested him to remain, and Mañjuśrī engaged in collateral discussion. The matter being finished, [the Buddha] now emits this light to respond to his intention. Since he does not permit him to request his remaining, he therefore uses the light to prompt the offering. Huilang, recounting Sengzong, comments: From here below down to the analogy of the lapis lazuli jewel, he opens the doctrine of cause and fruit of eternal presence for those of lower faculties.
