Sengliang comments: Upholding the restrictive precepts on account of causes and conditions is done either for one's own liberation or for [rebirth among] humans and gods. If it is not done for the ultimate, it is not ultimate upholding. Sengzong says: This is the third turn. Only one who cultivates the ultimate precepts is able to see. Baoliang says: Below, he wishes to use this ultimate and non-ultimate to verify the perfection and non-perfection of precepts. If one upholds the precepts ultimately, it is termed seeing with the eye and hearing and seeing; if one does not uphold the precepts ultimately, it is also not termed seeing with the eye or hearing and seeing. Those from the establishment of the five faculties headed by faith onward all belong to the category of ultimate upholding of precepts. If from the initial single faith onward, one ultimately enters the inner ordinary being [stages], continuing uninterrupted without abandonment up to achieving Buddhahood, this is also termed ultimate precepts.
