Sengliang states: "Previously he granted; now he deprives. Formerly, they clung to a partial grasp and considered it sufficient, seeking no further progress—are they not people who have passed their time in vain through negligence?" Sengzong states: "The monks having earnestly requested him to abide, the Buddha did not grant their request to abide, but instead urged them to question. The principle he set forth was not their realm; lacking any way to inquire, they retreated to hold fast to what they had attained, halting the path of progress. Responding to this thought of theirs, he thus reprimands them for passing their time in vain. He cites their former austerities to show that great compassion must not be betrayed."
