Sengliang states: Physical, verbal, and mental karmas are all the substance of giving. They are either pure or impure; if pure, the merit is abundant, and if impure, the merit is slight. Purity necessarily stems from faith, meaning there is mental purity. In the first three, one has both [faith and pure mind]; the remaining two have faith alternately. Although there are superiority and inferiority, all may be called pure. Yet deluded people, hearing it said that pure giving stems from faith and that faith is mental karma, thereupon claim that the requisites of giving reside only in the mind, thus giving rise to disputes.
