Sengliang states: In this meaning there are two [aspects]: first, both fruition and retribution; second, only fruition and not retribution. As for 'only fruition and not retribution': 'fruition' is the cause of retribution, so this designation is general; using 'cause' for the cause of retribution, this designation is specific. Tainted [karma] possesses both; untainted [karma] has only one. As for 'good son, because there is no retribution': karma is designated according to retribution; experiencing suffering and pleasure is the direct retribution. The nature of suffering is black; the nature of pleasure is white. Remedying suffering with pleasure is called the extinction of suffering through remedies and the tranquility of pleasure. As for 'having a fixed place to receive retribution': black is in the three bad destinies; white is among humans and gods. Uttarakuru is supreme regarding worldly pleasure, but inferior regarding the pleasure of the path.
